Yes - There are State and Federal funds available for Manufacturing and these are the people who will help you get them!
The NY/NJ District of PMA presents three experts in the field of training funding: Jim Dromsky of Orion Consulting, Joseph D'Urso of the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program (NJMEP), and David Tooker of the Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, which is one of 10 New York State MEP locations.
Federal and State monies are available for individual companies and consortiums of smaller companies. Consortiums of similar companies needing similar training are encouraged because they create synergies with education and training providers to identify and satisfy the competencies and skills required for our industry. PMA companies are eligible to apply for Customized Training Grants to fund training programs that enhance workers' technical skills.
The goal is to produce a more highly skilled and versatile workforce that contributes to your state's ability to attract new business and creates an environment conducive to expansion. Through these programs, PMA businesses are able to remain competitive through skill-upgrade training for full-time employees.
MEP is a nationwide network of not-for-profit centers that provides manufacturers with knowledge, skills and structure to stay in business and thrive. The centers are linked through the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and are funded by federal, state, local and private resources. Each center works directly with area manufacturers to provide specially tailored expertise and services, including worker training, business practices and information technology, using a combination of center staff and outside consultants.
Researchers at the Center for Economic Studies, U.S. Census Bureau, found that MEP clients experienced between 3.4 and 16 percent more growth in labor productivity over a five-year period than similar non-MEP companies.

Cinelli Iron & Metal Co. Plant Tour
Date: Thursday, May 17, 2007
Location: Cinelli Iron & Metal Co., 310 Secaucus Road, Secaucus, NJ 07094 201-348-8680
Schedule: 2:00 p.m.
Join the NY-NJ District PMA for a tour of Cinelli Iron & Metal's brand new state-of-the-art facility. Owners Joe and Craig Cinelli have been in the recycling business for 30 years and point with pride to the features of their new location, from the office building that was designed to their own specifications, to the environmental protection implementations, including soil testing and controlling storm water runoff with an oil/water separation system.
Onsite equipment includes a shear bale-logger that can process as much as 225 tons of metal a day, a power lifter with magnetic attachment, a shear that can cut I-beams, and two other material handlers. (Visit the company's website, www.cinelli-iron-metal.com, for photos of the amazing equipment we'll be seeing!)
The lifecycle of metals is key to our industry and Cinelli represents all phases of it. Cinelli is one of the largest buyers and brokers of ferrous and nonferrous metals in the industry. The Cinellis’ are aware of the shrinking industrial base that feeds their industry and the rising costs of raw materials. "There’s money in the metal that winds up in scrap heaps," says Joe Cinelli.
So enjoy networking with your peers while you pay attention to the bottom line and learn how to capitalize on the recyclable nature of these raw materials. (We’ve heard that last year some companies earned more on scrap than they did on product!)
If you are the only PMA contact person for your company, please invite someone from your purchasing and materials departments to attend this informative event.
